Terms of use

In short:
- Use Wordhoard for reading and learning. Don't attack the service or use it to reach somebody who hasn't invited you.
- The subscription renews until you cancel it, in your Apple account settings.
- Your words are yours. We claim nothing over them.
- Definitions come from Wiktionary and carry its licence.
Wordhoard is distributed through the App Store, so Apple's Standard End User Licence Agreement applies. These terms sit alongside it and cover what is specific to Wordhoard.
The subscription
- Wordhoard Unlimited costs £4.99 a month or £34.99 a year. Prices in other countries are set by the App Store and may differ.
- It is an auto-renewing subscription. It renews at the end of each period unless you turn off auto-renewal at least 24 hours beforehand.
- Payment is taken by Apple, and renewal is charged to your Apple account within 24 hours of the end of the current period.
- You can manage or cancel it in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device. We cannot cancel it for you.
- It is Family Shareable. One subscription covers everyone in your Apple Family group.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Ask through reportaproblem.apple.com.
Everything not listed as part of Unlimited is free and stays free. There is no limit on how many words, cards or reviews a free account may have.
Your account and your words
An account is optional. Your words, definitions, sentences and cards belong to you. We claim no ownership over anything you write and we do not use it to train anything.
You can delete everything we hold from You → Delete account in the app. See the privacy policy for exactly what that removes.
Making cards for other people
When you send words to somebody:
- Only send to people who have invited you by giving you a code from their own device.
- What you send is your responsibility. Don't send anything abusive, and don't use the feature to reach somebody who has ended the connection.
- Either side can end a connection at any time, without notice to the other.
- We may end a connection or an account that is used to harass somebody.
Fair use of the service
Please don't:
- Try to break, overload or work around the rate limits on our server
- Use the definition service through anything other than Wordhoard's own apps and extension
- Automate account creation, or make accounts to get around the free allowance
- Resell access to the service
We may suspend an account doing any of these. We would rather just email you first.
Where the content comes from
Dictionary definitions come from Wiktionary and are available under CC BY-SA 4.0. If you republish them, that licence comes with them.
Book text comes from Project Gutenberg, which holds works that are in the public domain in the United States. Copyright varies by country; if you are somewhere the work is still in copyright, that is between you and your local law.
Rewritten definitions are generated by a language model. They are usually better than the dictionary's and they are occasionally wrong, in the way that all generated text is occasionally wrong. Treat them as a good explanation rather than as an authority.
Availability
The parts of Wordhoard that matter most work offline and keep working if our server is down: your library, your cards, your reviews and Reading Mode are on your phone. Syncing, rewritten definitions and sharing need the service to be up, and we do not promise it always will be.
Liability
Wordhoard is provided as it is. We do not warrant that definitions are accurate, that the service is uninterrupted, or that using it will improve your vocabulary — though we have built it as if it will.
To the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, or fraud, and nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Changes
If these terms change, the date at the top will change. Changes that affect what you pay or what you get for it will be announced in the app before they take effect.
